Assam: Over 37,000 affected due to flood in 10 districts following heavy rainfall

Guwahati, June 19: Following very heavy rainfall in Assam’s various parts, the flood situation have worsened and affected over 37,535 people in 10 districts.

Due to heavy rainfall, floods affected large parts of Biswanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Udalguri.

Also, in cities, urban flooding has been reported in Kamrup Metro, Cachar and Nalbari districts.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department issued a ‘red’ alert, predicting very heavy rainfall across several districts of Assam and parts of Meghalaya for two days.

The warning by Met comes at a time when Assam is already witnessing flood situation due to incessant rain across the state in the last few days, Meghalaya had witnessed massive landslides.

According to official, the Brahmaputra river was flowing over the red mark in Nematighat in Jorhat district, the Kopili in Kampur and Puthimari in Kamrup district have also breached the danger level.

Due to the rising water in the rivers and continuous rainfall, has also left thousands of animals stranded.

According to ASDMA, 11,980 animals have been affected by the floods so far.

Silchar and Guwahati are also struggling with urban flood and locals are blaming the poor drainage system and lack of maintenance are the reasons for their sufferings.

On the other hand, an orange alert has been issued for heavy rain and thunderstorms in northeast India for the next three days
