Assam planning to replace diesel-run city buses in Guwahati with electric and CNG buses

Guwahati, Aug 20: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state government is mulling to replace diesel-run city buses in Guwahati with those operated on electricity and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas).

Talking to media persons in Guwahati, CM Sarma said, “The Assam cabinet on Friday decided to purchase a total of 200 electric buses and 100 CNG buses which will replace ASTC’s diesel-run city buses.”

“ASTC will stop operating diesel-run city buses. Our goal is to completely replace diesel-run buses with electric and CNG buses in Guwahati by the day this government completes one year,” CM Sarma informed.

He said, “Everyone is contributing in the process of reduction of carbon emissions. This will be Assam’s contribution towards the same. Within one year we have plans to replace the all the city buses with electric and CNG buses.”

CM Sarma further said, “The government has announced Rs 10,000 one time relief for inter district bus drivers and handymen. This will benefit 60,000 people. Due to Covid-19 restrictions the bus drivers and handymen faced lots of hurdles.”

“Within three months our government in Assam have done lots of work. NLFB militants and Kuki militants have returned to mainstream shunning violence. Our Assam police have done lots of work in last three months against anti-drugs campaign, human trafficking and cattle smuggling,” he added.

Assam government has also decides to  makes history and geography compulsory till Class 10 and decided to appoint 22,000 teachers in schools by September 2021.
