Guwahati, April 5: With just days left for polling, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday led a massive roadshow in Jorhat, drawing large crowds and signalling the BJP’s aggressive push in what is fast emerging as a key electoral battleground.
The show of strength comes as the BJP steps up its challenge against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, turning Jorhat—long considered his political turf—into a closely watched contest. The party has fielded sitting MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, banking on his local connect and organisational backing.

While Gogoi carries the legacy of his father, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, particularly in nearby Titabor, the BJP is seeking to counter that with an intensive ground campaign.
Addressing supporters during the roadshow, Sarma said the turnout reflected public support for the BJP and expressed confidence in a strong showing in Upper Assam.
The campaign, however, has taken a sharper turn in recent days, with the ‘beef’ controversy returning to the centre of political messaging. Sarma renewed his attack on AJP candidate Kunki Choudhury over allegations linked to beef consumption, escalating tensions between the BJP and opposition parties.

Reiterating his government’s position, the Chief Minister referred to the state’s cattle preservation law and called for strict enforcement, while also urging people to respect Assam’s religious and cultural sentiments.
He also courted controversy with remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, reflecting the increasingly combative tone of the campaign.
With the ‘beef’ row gaining traction and rhetoric sharpening on both sides, Jorhat is shaping up as one of the most closely watched contests in the run-up to polling.
