Guwahati, April 5: The campaign of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Choudhury received a significant boost after noted economist and London School of Economics alumnus Parakala Prabhakar publicly endorsed her ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections.

In a video message to voters, Parakala Prabhakar, husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, said the Assam elections carry significance beyond the state.

“These elections are not only crucial for Guwahati or Assam, but have long-term implications for the entire country,” he said, framing the contest as one with wider national implications.

Raising concerns over democratic values, he said secularism, tolerance, democracy, social justice, and equality were “under threat,” and urged voters to reject “intolerance and religious fanaticism.”

Endorsing Choudhury, he described her as “a bright, confident and well-educated young leader with national and international exposure,” adding that she brings “fresh ideas and the maturity needed to represent people effectively.”

He expressed confidence that she could transform the constituency and meet the people’s aspirations, appealing to voters to support her. “A vote for Kunki is a vote for development, constitutional values, and justice for Zubeen Garg,” he added.

The endorsement comes at a crucial juncture, as AJP looks to consolidate its position in Guwahati amid an increasingly high-pitched and polarised election campaign.
