Guwahati, Sept 19: The students of NIT Silchar on Tuesday sent an open letter to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking urgent action to resolve the escalating crisis at the institute.
“As concerned students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, we are writing to you with an increasing sense of urgency and desperation. The situation within our institution has escalated to an alarming level, necessitating your immediate intervention to avert further harm. The actions and attitudes of our college administration have plunged the campus into a state of chaos, causing widespread distress among the student body,” the letter stated.
The letter also apprised the President on the death of 3rd year student, Koj Buker, of the Electrical Department. The letter said the student committed suicide ‘due to the constant pressure from the Dean Academic B.K. Roy’.
“He was found dead in his room and since then no action has been against the authorities. If this continues to be the state of the college then we don’t know how many more such cases of suicide will surface. The Dean Academic has been harassing students since the beginning of his tenure. This also illustrates that the Director Dilip Kumar Baidya has been incompetent throughout his tenure and has failed miserably,” the letter said.
The students further demanded the administration of the institute to provide compensation to the parents of Late Koj Buker, be it in the form of financial aid, legal assistance or security in any form. In addition, they sought exemption from any disciplinary or legal action from the side of the administration against the students who were part of the protest seeking justice for Koj Bukar.
However, they demanded immediate resignation of the Dean Academics, Prof. B.K. Roy.
Further, they demanded constitution of a committee that would have members from outside the administration as well as elected students’ representatives, which will look at academic reforms that are student friendly, thereby reducing academic pressure on them.
The protest seeking justice for Koj Buker entered fourth day on Tuesday. The entire campus of the NIT Silchar has been buzzing for justice of the departed student.
On Monday, the students of NIT Silchar staged peaceful ‘Satyagraha’ seeking justice for Buker, who was found hanging in his hostel room on September 14.
