Dibrugarh, Aug 29: Four major Assam tea associations have joined forces to tackle issues threatening the sector’s future. The Assam Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers Association (ABLTMA), All Assam Small Tea Growers Association (AASTGA), Bharatiya Cha Parishad (BCP) and North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) announced a united front following a joint meeting at the historic Gymkhana Club in Dibrugarh.
At the top of the agenda was the sharp fall in green leaf prices, which has hit the state’s small tea growers hard. Representatives also expressed alarm over reports of banned chemicals and pesticides being used by some growers, warning that such practices are tarnishing the global reputation of Assam tea.

The groups further called for a complete restructuring of the Tea Board of India, accusing it of failing to meet its mandate. They demanded greater transparency, including the public release of data on tea exports and imports.
Raising the issue of unfair competition, the associations alleged that cheap teas from Kenya, Nepal and several African nations are being imported, blended, and then rebranded as Indian or Assam tea—undermining both quality and market trust.
