Guwahati, Jan 19: Congress aspirants and supporters gathered in large numbers at the party’s state headquarters, Rajiv Bhavan, in Guwahati on Monday to submit applications seeking party tickets ahead of 2026 Assam Assembly polls.
Among the applicants was Jonson J Sangma, a first-time candidate from the Garo community, who filed his application for the 28 No. Boko–Choygaon (ST) Assembly Constituency.
Sangma currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the APCC Minority Department and has been associated with the Congress party since 2001.
His candidature is being viewed as politically significant, especially in the context of a direct contest against the BJP in a constituency with a diverse tribal and non-tribal population.
Speaking to the media after submitting his application, Jonson J Sangma said:
“I am preparing for the election from the 28th Boko constituency and have submitted all the required documents for my candidature. I am very happy about this constituency because it has both tribal and non-tribal communities. One part of the constituency lies close to the Brahmaputra Valley, while another connects Goalpara district with Kamrup Metro. There is immense scope for development here.”
He added that he has been actively preparing for nearly a year and expressed optimism about receiving the party ticket.
“If I get the ticket, I will be very happy. I have been meeting people regularly, and they have supported us till today. I hope voters will choose me as their representative.”
Highlighting the representation of the Garo community, Sangma said he received tribal status in 2003 and emphasized the importance of inclusive politics.
“I belong to the Garo community, and since 2003, we have received tribal recognition. I hope not only the Garo community but also Rabha, Boro, Hajong, Koch-Rajbongshi, Bengali, Assamese, and other communities will support this candidature. It will be good for everyone.”
Several other aspirants also submitted their applications at Rajiv Bhavan on Monday, expressing strong hope of securing Congress tickets ahead of the crucial 2026 Assembly elections.
