Assam tightens Aadhaar rules to curb illegal immigration

Must read

Guwahati, June 28: Assam government is implementing stringent new rules for Aadhaar card issuance.

The decision, taken during a cabinet meeting, is a direct response to concerns that illegal immigrants—primarily adults—have been obtaining the unique identification document in Assam through fraudulent means.

Speaking to reporters, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Under the new directive, District Commissioners (DCs) will soon be the exclusive authority for issuing Aadhaar cards to adult citizens.”

“We discussed the need to tighten Aadhaar issuance rules. Usually, people who come to Assam—and Bharat—from Bangladesh illegally are adults,” Sarma said.

The announcement comes shortly after Assam deported 20 more illegal Bangladeshi immigrants—an operation the Chief Minister believes will be strengthened by the new Aadhaar rules.

“Last night, we deported 20 more Bangladeshis as part of our ongoing efforts to detect and push back illegal infiltrators. The decision to tighten Aadhaar issuance rules will further support our efforts in this regard,” he said.

Sarma added that Assam has already achieved 100% Aadhaar coverage, and only newborns now require enrolment, which will continue through the “normal process” at seva kendras.
