Guwahati, Oct 7: Assam Cabinet on Friday decided that there will be examinations held for classes 5 and 8 wherein if a student fails, he/she will be detained in the same class and won’t be promoted.
The Assam cabinet announced that the state government will conduct examinations for students of classes 5 and 8 in all state-run schools.
The state government has already amended the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, following which all students in classes 5 and 8 have to pass in their annual examinations for promotion.
Earlier, in the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, a provision was made, wherein, from classes 1 to 8 standard the exams, which are held every quarter, did not complement the pass or fail of any student. The students were passed automatically to the next class.
However, in 2019 the act was amended and following this, if any student has not performed well in the examination, he/she shall be eligible to be detained in the same class for the second year.
In line with the amended act, the Assam state cabinet on October 7, 2022, decided that from now on all students must pass classes 5 and 8 in the exams to be held annually.
If any student fails the annual examination then within two months, special exams for failed students will be held again and the teachers of the institution will take special care of the students so that they pass the examination. However, if the student still fails in the said examination, he/she will have to re-appear in the same class again.
