Guwahati, May 25: The tabling of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday triggered sharp political reactions, with leaders from the BJP, Congress, Raijor Dal and AIUDF clashing over the contentious legislation during ongoing session.
The Uniform Civil Code Bill, Assam 2026, was formally introduced in the House on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, setting the stage for an intense political debate in the coming days.
BJP MLA Sushanta Buragohain welcomed the move, saying the proposed law would bring all communities under a single constitutional framework and strengthen the rights of women.
Speaking to reporters, Buragohain said that several sections in Assam continue to follow separate personal laws and argued that the UCC would ensure a uniform legal system for all citizens.
He claimed that women from certain religious communities facing issues such as triple talaq and polygamy would particularly benefit from the legislation.
“The insecure community, mostly the women community, will get their rights and come under a single law under the Constitution,” Buragohain said.
He further alleged that practices like polygamy are followed by “certain sections” of society and maintained that the proposed law would offer legal protection to women abandoned through triple talaq. He also said the legislation is expected to bring greater legal clarity to live-in relationships.
Congress MLA Baby Begum strongly opposed the bill, accusing the government of ignoring the concerns of opposition parties and minority communities.
“We are protesting against the UCC Bill, but they are not listening to us because they are in the majority. Every community has its own religion and traditions. We believe this move is wrong and we will continue to protest against the bill inside and outside the Assembly,” she said.
Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi alleged that the legislation was politically motivated and aimed at strengthening the Chief Minister’s standing within the BJP leadership.
“The UCC has no meaning. This is only being used to build the political career of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” Gogoi said, adding that his party sees little significance in the proposed legislation.
AIUDF MLA Muzibur Rahman also criticised the bill, alleging that it specifically targets the Muslim community and interferes with Sharia law.
“Our party is against the UCC and does not support it. Existing laws regarding polygamy are already there, so there is no need for another law. This is only targeting the sentiments of Muslims,” Rahman said.
He further accused the government of diverting public attention from inflation and rising fuel prices.
“The discussion should be on price rise and economic issues affecting the people. Instead, the government is focusing on the UCC,” he added.
The Assam government’s move comes after similar efforts toward implementing a Uniform Civil Code in states such as Uttarakhand and Gujarat, making Assam one of the latest BJP-ruled states to push for a common civil law framework.
