Guwahati, Jan 01: In a major development, the pro-talk leaders said that the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) will get disbanded within 10–15 days.
The historic peace agreement between the Center, the Assam government, and the pro-talk faction of the ULFA was signed in New Delhi on December 29.
The peace pact with ULFA is a major development in the history of Assam. It has been regarded as a landmark tripartite peace agreement between the Center, the Assam government, and the pro-talk faction of the outfit.
Anup Chetia and Arabinda Rajkhowa, who are among the founding members of the ULFA, stated that the signing of the pact was in the best interest of everyone involved.
They said that following the signing of the peace deal, the ULFA will be disbanded and the outfit’s weapons will be handed over to the government.
In February 2011, ULFA split into two groups. The one led by Rajkhowa decided to give up arms and sit down for talks with the Union government without preconditions.
The hardline Paresh Baruah faction of the ULFA was not part of the agreement. The pro-talks faction has 726 members as opposed to some 200 members of the extremist faction, according to police officials familiar with the matter.
Baruah decided against any negotiations and rebranded his faction as ULFA-Independent, which still runs training camps, including in Myanmar, and has maintained that for any conversation with the state to happen, the sovereignty of Assam must be on the agenda. He is wanted by
