Assamese film actress Arati Barua dies at 87

Shillong, June 1: Assamese film actress Arati Barua, died on Thursday, June 1 at 1:10 pm. She was 87. She was the wife of artist/singer Luit Konwar Rudra Baruah.

According to reports, Arati was undergoing treatment at GNRC after she suffered a stroke on April 18.

Aarti started her acting career with Bhaben Saikia’s Sandhyaraag in 1976. She has acted in several films like ‘Agnisnan’, ‘Sandhyaraag’ and several others and also in TV serials.

At the age of 82, she was seen in the Award winning Sonar Boron Pakhi, a biopic on Pratima Pandey.

An inborn artist, she also performed on the stage both in Shillong and Guwahati in more than 100 plays with great artists like Phani Sharma and several others.

She also headed the Luit Konwar Rudra Barua Memorial Trust and also wrote a book on the songs of her legendary husband and artist/singer Rudra Barua.

Aarti was born in Tura on 12th September, 1935. Aarti, a daughter of a civil servant, did her early schooling in Jorhat, Goalpara, Barpeta, Nagao, Lakhimpur. She completed her class 10 from Shillong and studied in Lady Keane College Shillong.
