Bethany Hospital Outreach in Nongpoh performs breakthrough Peritoneal Dialysis on newborn

Must read

Nongpoh, June 30: In a groundbreaking development for rural healthcare, Bethany Hospital Outreach in Nongpoh has achieved a remarkable medical feat by successfully performing peritoneal dialysis on a newborn for the first time. Led by Dr. D. Ranee, Consultant Paediatrician, the hospital delivered specialized treatment to a critically ill newborn.

On May 30, 2023, a newborn was delivered at Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, through an assisted breech delivery. The baby did not cry after birth, raising concerns about potential complications. The medical team immediately referred the newborn to Bethany Hospital Outreach for specialized care.

Upon arrival, the hospital’s dedicated team initiated critical resuscitation measures to stabilize the baby’s condition.

Initial evaluations revealed that the baby was suffering from HIE stage II (Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy) and Acute Kidney Injury. To address the escalating kidney concerns, the medical team discussed available treatment options with the family and decided to proceed with peritoneal dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis, a complex procedure involving the meticulous removal of waste products and excess fluids from the body, facilitated blood purification within the peritoneal cavity.

Peritoneal dialysis was initiated after repeated kidney function tests indicated significant elevation. Despite the challenge of peritonitis, a serious infection of the peritoneum that the baby subsequently developed, the medical team successfully treated the condition, allowing peritoneal dialysis sessions to continue until the baby’s kidney functions improved. Through dedicated care and treatment, the baby showed remarkable progress, recovered, and was eventually discharged on June 22, 2023.

A follow-up check-up after seven days of discharge revealed that the baby was in excellent health and thriving.

This medical achievement is particularly noteworthy, considering the limited resources and challenges associated with healthcare services in rural areas.

Bethany Hospital has expressed its gratitude to Dr. D. Ranee and the entire medical team for their expertise and unwavering dedication, which contributed to this significant medical success.
