BJP’s Sunil Deodhar regrets Meghalaya remarks, affirms ‘immense respect for Christ’

SHILLONG, FEB 25: Senior BJP leader and former national secretary Sunil Deodhar has issued a written clarification expressing regret for remarks made at an Indigenous Faith Conference in Pynter, Pynursla (East Khasi Hills), after the state party sought an explanation.

In a letter addressed to BJP state general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna, Deodhar stressed that he holds “immense respect for Lord Jesus Christ and deep affection for the Christian community.”

He wrote: “It was never my intention to hurt the sentiments of any Christian brother or sister. If any of my words have been perceived as disrespectful or have caused pain, I sincerely regret the same.”

Deodhar explained that his speech was delivered at a gathering focused on indigenous faiths and was meant to address “preservation, protection, and development concerns of indigenous faith communities,” not to comment broadly on Christianity.

He pointed to two decades of work through his organisation My Home India, noting that it has aided thousands of Christian youths from the Northeast.

“Through the same organisation, we regularly organise Advent Christmas celebrations for Christian youth who live far away from their families across India,” he wrote, citing an event hosted at the residence of former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani.

Deodhar added that supporting indigenous faith followers — such as Niam Khasi and Niam Tre — should not be seen as hostility toward other religions. “Advocating justice and equal opportunity for one community does not amount to hatred against another… India’s strength lies in this mutual respect and civilizational pluralism,” he said, invoking the government’s motto of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’.

He closed by reiterating regret for any unintended hurt and affirming his commitment to “harmony, inclusivity, and justice for all communities.”
