Shillong, Dec 20: The newly established Captain Williamson Sangma State University is set to become a vital center for tribal studies, with the creation of a dedicated Department of Tribal Studies aimed at preserving and promoting Meghalaya’s endangered dialects and tribal languages.
Announcing the initiative, Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma highlighted the government’s commitment to safeguarding the region’s rich cultural heritage through education. “We are committed to safeguarding our cultural heritage through education,” he affirmed, adding, “The inclusion of a Tribal Studies department is a significant step forward in this endeavor.”
To ensure the university’s smooth functioning, the Vice-Chancellor has been tasked with prioritizing the establishment of key departments and initiating academic activities. Classes are expected to commence in 2025, alongside the process of affiliating colleges with the university.
On the topic of college affiliations, Sangma stated, “We are currently evaluating the best approach for the university to function as an affiliating institution. A definitive decision on this will be made soon.”
In a further development, Sangma announced plans to propose land allocation for the university campus in New Shillong Township. Also, efforts to secure approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) are underway.
