Tura, Feb 5: Several civil society organisations from East Garo Hills have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against an unidentified coal syndicate or mafia for allegedly transporting coal illegally in violation of Supreme Court directives and relevant laws.
The FIR was jointly submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of Rongmil Outpost under OGC Police Station on February 3 by the Achik State People’s Front (ASPF), AHAM, and GOERA NGO Rongmil Regional Unit. The complaint was signed by the presidents and secretary of the respective organisations.
According to the FIR, coal is being transported from the Nongal area of East Garo Hills to the neighbouring state of Assam without valid documents. The NGOs alleged that the coal-laden trucks are frequently overloaded and operate mainly during night hours along NH-62 and NH-217 to evade checks.

The complaint states that information regarding the illegal transportation was obtained from one of the truck drivers, who revealed that the operation is being carried out by an organised syndicate or mafia.
The civil society groups have urged the police to immediately register the complaint as an FIR, seize and impound all illegally transported or overloaded coal-laden vehicles, and conduct a thorough investigation to identify the main financiers and individuals involved in the organised racket.
They further demanded strict legal action against those responsible, stating that such activities not only violate court orders but also pose serious environmental and safety concerns in the region.
Police officials are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
