CM holds review meeting to assess cyclone situation in state, restoration works under process

Shillong, Oct 25: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on Tuesday held a review meeting with the Deputy Commissioners via video conferencing to assess the situation in the state due to cyclone Sitrang.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Minister said that the meeting was meant to take stock of the extent of damage due to the cyclone and to work out the action plan to move forward.

He also urged the Deputy Commissioners to immediately work on restoration and relief measures and also pressed the MeECL to restore power at disrupted areas at the earliest.

He also said that the gratuitous relief to the affected should be provided immediately as per the norms of National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF).

The Deputy Commissioners in their preliminary assessment reported on damages to houses, road, paddy and areca nut plantations. Landslides and water logging were reported in some parts of Shillong. Two persons were reported of electrocution in East Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills respectively. The Deputy Commissioners also said that immediate assistance has been provided to affected households and population, work for restoration of power and clearance of road blocks and landslides are underway or have been completed in most areas.

Director in Distribution, MePDCL gave a brief report on the damage to poles and power disruption, informing that MeECL personnel are in the field to restore power. He also informed that in some areas rain and wind has impeded restoration works.
