Imphal, April 12: In a striking display of humanity amid ongoing ethnic tensions, a road accident in the conflict-ridden region of Manipur inspired the local Kuki-Zo community to show compassion.
Around 3:00 PM on April 11, a truck transporting potatoes en route to Imphal met with a fatal accident near Keithelmanbi Military Colony along National Highway-2 in Kangpokpi District—a Kuki-Zo-dominated area.

Locals, upon hearing the crash, rushed to the scene. Amid the scattered potato sacks, they discovered an injured man later identified as Hemam Prem Singh (36), son of H. Inaocha Singh, from Moirang Turenbul Leikai, Ward No. 4 under Moirang Sub Division in Bishnupur District.
The victim was from the Meitei community—a fact that, in another context, might have heightened tensions. But in this moment of crisis, humanity prevailed.
Kuki-Zo locals, alongside Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on Road Opening Patrol (ROP) duty, quickly offered assistance and ensured the injured man was evacuated to a hospital for urgent medical care.

This act of compassion comes despite the Kuki-Zo community’s deep-seated opposition to the government’s controversial Free Movement Regime (FMR) policy and the broader backdrop of inter-ethnic hostilities that have gripped the state.
It remains unclear why the Meitei man was travelling through the Kuki-Zo-dominated area, but the response to his plight sent a powerful message—sometimes, compassion can momentarily bridge even the deepest divides.
