Congress betrayed us, ousted us from alliance: Akhil Gogoi

Must read

Guwahati, Mar 8: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Sunday alleged that the Congress had betrayed his party and effectively ousted it from the opposition alliance by not informing them about a recent alliance meeting.

Addressing a press conference in Kaziranga, Gogoi said talks between the two parties broke down over seat-sharing disagreements, particularly regarding the Dhing Assembly constituency.

Gogoi said the Raijor Dal had sought 13 seats as part of the proposed alliance, but the Congress was willing to offer only four seats, leading to a deadlock in negotiations.

He also alleged that the Congress had prepared its candidate list unilaterally without proper consultation with alliance partners.

Gogoi further criticised Gaurav Gogoi, blaming what he described as the “arrogance” of the state Congress leadership for the collapse of the alliance.

“On March 6, 2026, a meeting of all opposition parties was held in Guwahati to discuss seat sharing, but we were not invited to the meeting. We feel humiliated and very dissatisfied with the Congress. As an alliance partner we are important, but they did not inform us,” said Akhil Gogoi.

He added, “We are against the fascist mindset of the government and that is why we are with the opposition parties. But we feel deeply humiliated for not being informed about the March 6 meeting.”

Gogoi said it was “insulting” that the Congress held a press conference announcing an alliance with four parties while leaving out his party, Raijor Dal.

“Congress and Raijor Dal are two different parties. Our ideologies are different. Congress is a national party, while we are a regional party that believes in federalism. We joined the united forum to fight against the BJP-RSS, but it seems the Congress does not believe in friendship. They have always betrayed us,” Gogoi asserted.

He further said, “We had sought only 15 seats from the Congress, but they are not willing to give us the seats. Gaurav Gogoi is not serious about alliance partners. We feel insulted for not being invited to the meeting.”

In the last Assembly elections, Raijor Dal won only one seat, with Akhil Gogoi securing victory from Sivasagar. This time, the party is seeking to contest more seats and had submitted its proposal to alliance partners, but the talks failed to progress.

In recent times, Raijor Dal has been trying to expand its base among minorities in lower Assam, with several prominent leaders from the minority community joining the party.
Raijor Dal, a regional political party, was formed in the aftermath of the anti-CAA movement, with Akhil Gogoi serving as its chief patron.
