Shillong, Aug 22: “Conjunctivitis is relatively harmless, even though it transmits quickly from person to person and is highly curable,” said Meghalaya Health Minister Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh, in response to the rising cases of conjunctivitis reported in the state.
“Conjunctivitis is a communicable disease that is seasonal. It spreads rapidly from person to person, but it is never a life and death situation, a very much curable disease,” Dr. Ampareen stated during an interview with reporters on Monday.
Despite this, it is important to take precautions such as avoiding touching or rubbing eyes. If any symptoms are experienced, individuals should consult a doctor and even wear goggles at home to prevent further spread within the family, the Health Minister added.
Urging citizens to only use prescribed medications, the Minister emphasized, “Most of the time, we self-prescribe medications, which is especially harmful to our eyes. We should only take medicines recommended by doctors; otherwise, they could cause irreversible damage to our eyes.”
Further, stating that the Health Department is aware of the situation, she said the government is making every effort to control the outbreak’s spread.
