Shillong, Aug 4: Construction of the 102 km Borghat-Sonapur road along the Indo-Bangladesh border in East Jaintia Hills District will commence by early September. This was informed by Government of Meghalaya during a hearing conducted by the Meghalaya High Court on a PIL here on Wednesday.

A letter of acceptance has been issued by the State or the appropriate agency of the State to the contractor who has been identified to undertake the work. The contractor has also furnished a bank guarantee. Certain other formalities, including the modalities of construction, have to be worked out, according to the state.

It informed that the work on the Borghat-Sonapur 102 km road should commence by early September.

The State has also assured that the funds are available and there would be no impediment to the quick completion of the construction once it commences.

In view of this, the court has directed the State to file a status report within six weeks. The report should indicate the time of completion and, if possible, a bar chart indicating the stages of construction, it stated.

The PIL was filed by Kynjaimon Amse following the hardships faced by the residents of four villages – Hingaria, Huroi, Lahalein and Lejri – having a population of more than 5,000 – due to absence of road connectivity.

The next hearing on the matter will be held on September 16.
