Guwahati, May 26: A Fast Track Court in Guwahati on Tuesday formally framed charges against seven accused persons in the alleged death case involving Assam’s iconic singer Zubeen Garg, paving the way for the trial to begin from June 8.

The court of Judge Sharmila Bhuyan framed charges against all those named in the chargesheet under multiple provisions related to criminal conspiracy, murder, extortion, cheating, criminal breach of trust and destruction of evidence.

Special Public Prosecutor and Gauhati High Court advocate Ziaul Kamar said accused number five, Sandeepan Garg, has additionally been charged under provisions related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

“Today, the Court presided over by Sharmila Bhuyan framed charges against all the accused persons against whom the chargesheet has been filed. Accordingly, charges have been framed under sections relating to conspiracy, murder, destruction of evidence, extortion, criminal breach of trust and cheating,” Kamar told reporters after the hearing.

He said the next hearing has been fixed for June 8 and the trial is expected to proceed on a day-to-day basis unless the accused approach the Gauhati High Court and secure a stay order.

The development marks a major step forward in the high-profile case, which has drawn widespread public attention across Assam.

Partha Pratim Goswami, a close friend of Zubeen Garg, said the framing of charges had strengthened hopes of justice for the singer and his family.
“We are hopeful that justice will be served. The case is moving strongly from our side, and now the main phase of the trial will begin with witnesses appearing before the court,” Goswami said.

Meanwhile, Garima Garg, wife of Zubeen Garg, welcomed the court’s order and expressed confidence in the judicial process.

“We expected justice from the court, and they are delivering it. Those who have God’s support are sure to receive justice. The court is handling this case very impartially, and we have full confidence that justice will prevail,” she said.
