Must read

Shillong, June 16: Although the daily caseload of Covid-19 in Meghalaya has consistently been below 500 for few days, the numbers do not seem to be going down any further. This is mainly due to high numbers being reported from rural areas, a big concern for the government.

Joint Secretary & Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM), Meghalaya, Ram Kumar said the virus has travelled deep in the rural areas and the rising cases from such areas are a cause of worry.

He also informed that the State is doing 5,000 daily, which is below the ideal target of 10,000 to 15,000.

495 cases were detected on Wednesday of which 122 were in East Khasi Hills, 91 in South West Khasi Hill, 74 in West Garo Hills, 64 in Ri Bhoi, 32 in North Garo Hills, 26 in East Garo Hills, 23 in West Jaintia Hills, 20 in West Khasi Hills, 20 in South Garo Hills, 19 in South West Garo Hills, and 4 in East Jaintia Hills.

At the same time, 453 recoveries were made with the maximum being in East Khasi Hills with 222 followed by 53 in West Garo Hills and 51 in Ri Bhoi district. 8 people also succumbed to the virus during the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the expectations for the lockdown to continue are high as the new cases are still on the higher side.

Kumar said stringent containment measures will continue as long as the state’s caseload and positivity rate remains high.

He urged people to stay at home and be very careful when they step out; at the same time they should get vaccinated.
