Demand for first female DGP for Meghalaya

Must read

Shillong, July 13: With the tenure of incumbent Meghalaya DGP, R. Chandranathan ending in November this year, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded appointment of State’s first female DGP in the name of Additional DGP Idashisha Nongrang, who is also the senior most IPS officer of Assam-Meghalaya Cadre (Meghalaya Wing).

“It will be a momentous occasion for the indigenous communities as well as the state as a whole if the state government appoint Idashisha Nongrang as the first ever woman DGP of the state,” HYC general secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said in a memorandum to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday.

The tenure of Meghalaya’s present DGP, R. Chandranathan, IPS (1986 batch) will end in November, this year or on attaining superannuation on 13.12.2021. He was appointed on November 6, 2018.

“Considering Meghalaya is predominantly a matrilineal society and to have a female officer from the indigenous community of the state to be appointed to the highest-ranking post of police officer of the state is a matter of great pride to us as a community and the state as a whole,” Synrem added.

On government’s policy of choosing the senior most officer for the top cop’s post, he said as per the official website of the Meghalaya Police providing the list of IPS Officers Assam-Meghalaya Cadre (Meghalaya Wing), the senior most Officer after the present DGP is Idashisha Nongrang, IPS (1992 Batch), who is at present holding the post of Additional Director General of Police (L&O/TAP), Meghalaya, Shillong.

“As an organisation we feel that Nongrang is a deserving candidate to be appointed to the highest-ranking police officer in the state. The service records and experiences of Nongrang speaks for itself of her capability to lead the police department,” he said.

However, he cautioned that the HYC would strongly object to any attempt to appoint a person serving in other states as the next DGP of the state as was done in the past by denying the deserving senior-most officer serving the state having fulfilled the requisite criteria for such an appointment.
