Imphal, Sept 22: With Manipur still grappling with over 16 months of ethnic violence, the state is now confronted with another crisis, this time a health crisis of dengue outbreak.
The state has reported 400 cases this year, thus far, but alarm bells have been sounded with 148 cases reported in the month of August alone. Despite the renewed violence in the State that is seeing sophisticated weapons like drone bombs being used to target people, Manipur government has declared dengue outbreak as the top priority, urging people to curb the spread of the virus.
Data from the state’s health department reveals that more than 83 percent of confirmed dengue cases have been concentrated in the districts of Imphal West and Imphal East. The latest victim to lose his life to the outbreak has been reported from Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai.
Manipur Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh, has expressed deep concern over the situation and appealed for widespread community involvement. “We need the participation of everyone—households, localities, and communities. Only together can we successfully fight dengue,” he said.
While health officials and staff are actively engaged in case monitoring, public awareness campaigns, and source reduction initiatives, Dr. Singh highlighted challenges faced by health teams in certain areas. Reports of restricted access to inspect mosquito breeding sites and occasional hostility toward workers have raised concerns about the effectiveness of containment efforts.
The health minister called for greater cooperation from the public, noting that while government efforts continue, community participation will be key in managing and eventually overcoming the outbreak.
