Digital birth certificates now mandatory in Nagaland

Must read

Kohima, July 16: Nagaland has completed its transition to a fully digital Birth and Death Registration system, making online registration mandatory across the state from 2025 in a move expected to make birth certificates the primary gateway to government services.

Director of Economics & Statistics Neidilhou Keditsu said the state has been strengthening the digital Civil Registration System (CRS) since its launch in 2022, with all birth and death records now being maintained electronically.

In an exclusive interaction, Keditsu said digital birth certificates have become increasingly important as they are now required for obtaining key government documents, including Aadhaar and other official identity cards.

“The transition to digital registration is aimed at ensuring secure record-keeping, faster verification and seamless access to government services,” he said.

He noted that the department has been preparing for the shift ever since online registration was introduced, with the focus now on ensuring effective implementation across the state.

The digital platform is expected to reduce paperwork, improve the accuracy of civil records and enable government departments to verify documents electronically, cutting down delays in service delivery.

Officials said the move forms part of Nagaland’s broader push towards digital governance and citizen-centric public services. The department is also encouraging residents to register births and deaths promptly through the online system, as digital certificates are increasingly becoming essential for accessing welfare schemes, educational admissions and other government benefits.

With the rollout now complete, timely online registration is expected to become a key requirement for every family in the state, ensuring that citizens can seamlessly access identity documents and public services throughout their lives.
