Shillong, March 22: Amid a rise in fire incidents across East Jaintia Hills district, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner has issued a comprehensive public advisory, urging residents, institutions, and commercial establishments to adopt strict fire safety measures.
The advisory, released by the District Disaster Management Authority, highlights that recurring fire outbreaks have led to significant damage to homes, businesses, and public institutions, along with loss of lives and property. Authorities have called for heightened vigilance and preparedness to prevent further tragedies.
Residents have been advised to follow basic precautions such as not leaving cooking unattended, keeping flammable materials away from fire sources, and avoiding open burning near residential areas. The administration has also stressed the importance of installing fire extinguishers in key locations such as kitchens and exit points, and developing clear evacuation plans.
Special emphasis has been placed on electrical safety, with instructions to avoid overloading sockets, use certified appliances, and regularly inspect wiring systems. Households and offices have been encouraged to install smoke alarms and ensure unobstructed emergency exits.
For commercial establishments, the advisory mandates shopkeepers and vendors to undergo fire safety training, install fire alarm and suppression systems, maintain clear exit routes with emergency lighting, and safely store hazardous materials. Regular mock drills and the display of emergency contact numbers have also been recommended.
The advisory further outlines steps to be followed during a fire emergency, including raising alarms, evacuating calmly, assisting vulnerable individuals, and using methods such as “stop, drop, and roll” to control flames on clothing.
In case of fire, residents have been urged to immediately contact emergency services by dialling 112 or 101, and provide accurate location details.
Authorities reiterated that timely action and public awareness remain critical in reducing fire-related risks and ensuring community safety.
