Elephant and Jeep Safaris in Kaziranga to Close for Monsoon Season

Must read

Guwahati, April 25: The Eastern Assam Wildlife Division has announced the closure of popular Elephant and Jeep safaris in the iconic Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve for the upcoming monsoon season. The closures aim to ensure visitor safety and maintain the ecological balance within the UNESCO World Heritage site during the inclement weather.

In an official notice issued on April 25th, 2024, authorities stated that the elephant safari rides will be suspended starting May 1st, while the jeep safari operations will cease from May 16th onwards. These dates mark the beginning of the annual pre-monsoon rains which render many roads and trails impassable.

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, is renowned for its vast expanses of tall elephant grass, marshlands, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the world’s largest population of great Indian one-horned rhinoceroses (Rhinoceros unicornis), tigers, leopards, panthers, bears, elephants, wild pigs, hog deer, swamp deer, buffalo, and various species of pelicans, storks, and other waterfowl.

While elephant and jeep safaris will be off-limits, park authorities have assured that other activities like nature walks, bird watching tours, and visits to the interpretation centers will remain open to visitors during the monsoon season, subject to weather conditions.

Tourists planning to visit Kaziranga are advised to check the official park website and reschedule their travel plans accordingly to avoid disappointment. The elephant and jeep safari operations are expected to resume after the monsoon rains subside, typically in late October or early November.
