Baghmara, May 7: Occupants in an alto car and a bike heading towards Baghmara narrowly escaped with their lives when a wild herd of elephants charged at them on the border road on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened between Nilwagre and Rasnagre village on the border road, 16 kms from Baghmara town.
Two riders on a motorcycle and a family group in an alto car had left Sibbari village and were heading towards Baghmara via the border road when the incident happened at around 2 PM.
Commuters are forced to use the border road to commute between Baghmara and Tura in view of the extremely deteriorated condition of the main highway that passes through the hills.
The travellers were shocked to find close to a dozen wild elephants occupying the border road and the pachyderms immediately reacted on seeing the vehicles.
They barely managed to escape from the vehicles leaving behind all their luggage and the herd went on a rampage crushing the bike and the car before pushing it off the road into a slope.
The trail of destruction was evident across the entire stretch of the road that was strewn with clothes and other personal belongings.
