Guwahati, Dec 5: The Nagaon district administration on Friday reclaimed 38 bighas of government and forest land in Rupahihat during a large-scale eviction drive targeting alleged illegal settlements.
The operation centred on forest land under Bhakatgaon in Khatuwal Mouza, where notices had earlier been served to more than 100 families, directing them to vacate the area. Officials said a significant portion of the land had already been vacated voluntarily before the eviction began.

To ensure a smooth operation, authorities deployed over 1,000 police personnel along with four bulldozers. By midday, nearly 80% of the encroached land had been cleared, with the remaining families moving out as the drive progressed.
Many locals endorsed the administration’s action.
“The government has taken the right step. Land ownership must be respected. Anyone who wishes to build a house should buy land legally, not encroach on government property,” a resident said.
