Final ‘Jeng Bihu’ practice culminates with enthusiasm by Guwahati’s Kharghuli Women’s Group

Guwahati, April 12: As the Bohag Bihu festivities near, the women’s group of Kharghuli in Guwahati have concluded their final practice sessions for the traditional ‘Jeng Bihu’ dance with fervour and dedication.

The group, consisting predominantly of housewives, expressed their deep-seated connection to the cultural essence of Bihu. Despite their busy schedules, these women have committed themselves to preserve this cherished tradition.

Talking to Hub news members of the group said that “we have come out for bihu, because we are all housewives, we are the ones who are dancing called ‘Jeng bihu’. There is no dhool and Pepa, there are only three instruments used like toka, gagana and sutoli ” she added ”.

A member stated that, “Bihu flows in our veins, it’s an inseparable part of our identity. “We have dedicated around 15 to 20 days to practice and perfect the art. As the Bihu festivities kick off tomorrow, we are ready to showcase our passion and dedication through dance and song”.

Jeng Bihu’, also known as gos tolor bihu, holds historical significance, with women traditionally surrounding their performance area with sticks known as ‘jeng’ in Assamese.

This form of Bihu, primarily seen in upper Assam, serves as the counterpart to the men-only husori.

The essence of Bihu has filled every corner of Assamese society, with individuals of all ages eagerly participating in the festivities. From donning traditional attire like tairiya to organizing Bihu workshops, communities across the state are united in their efforts to uphold this cherished tradition in its purest form.

As the drums of celebration reverberate across Guwahati and beyond, the Kharghuli women’s group are set to mesmerize audiences with their vibrant performances, embodying the spirit of Bihu with Bihu dance and melodious tune.
