Final site cleared for Doppler Weather Radar installation in Tura

TURA, July 9: The final site for the installation of a Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in Tura has been cleared following a joint inspection by officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other agencies, paving the way for work to begin shortly under the Centre’s Mission Mausam initiative.

The inspection was conducted on July 8 at Albella Chidekgre under Rongram C&RD Block by officials from the IMD headquarters in New Delhi, the IMD Meteorological Centre in Shillong, the District Disaster Management Office (DDMO), Rongram C&RD Block, and representatives of Pattern India Limited, Chennai. The Nokma of Albella Chidekgre and local residents also participated in the site visit.

The inspection formed part of the final site confirmation process being carried out by the IMD in coordination with the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).

Officials said the site has now been finalized and installation of the Doppler Weather Radar is expected to commence soon.

Once operational, the radar is expected to significantly strengthen weather surveillance across the Garo Hills by providing more accurate rainfall and storm monitoring, improving weather forecasting, and enhancing early warning systems for disasters such as heavy rain, thunderstorms and flash floods. Authorities said the facility will bolster disaster preparedness and response capabilities in the region.
