Shillong, July 8: A week-long celebration marking the 5th Foundation Day of the Ministry of Cooperation concluded in Tura on Monday with a call to involve more young people in strengthening Meghalaya’s cooperative movement and creating sustainable rural livelihoods.
The closing programme was held at the All Garo Hills Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd. (AGHMPCS) in Babadam and brought together officials from the Office of the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies (ARCS), Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank (MCAB), NABARD, Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), Tura Urban Cooperative Bank (TUCB) and cooperative societies from across West Garo Hills.

Held under the theme “Youth Participation in the Growth and Development of Cooperatives,” the event highlighted the role of cooperatives in generating employment, promoting entrepreneurship and boosting rural development.
Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies, West Garo Hills, urged greater youth participation in cooperative institutions, saying the sector has the potential to drive inclusive economic growth and strengthen community-based enterprises.
A video presentation showcased awareness campaigns and outreach activities conducted across the district during the week-long celebration to promote the cooperative movement.
Addressing the gathering, Fr. Sunny encouraged young people to take leadership roles in cooperatives and explore opportunities in agriculture, agri-business and community enterprises.

The programme also featured a presentation by All Garo Hills Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd. on its initiatives in agricultural consultancy, micro-finance, value addition through processing units and rural livelihood promotion.
Debate competition winners and outstanding staff members were felicitated during the event, while cultural performances and an interactive session with youth focused on expanding cooperative activities and creating employment opportunities through agriculture and entrepreneurship.
The organisers said the celebrations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the cooperative movement in Meghalaya by empowering rural communities, promoting sustainable agriculture and encouraging greater youth participation in cooperative-led development.
