Shillong, Apr 18: Out of 543 parliamentary constituencies, 102 constituencies will go for polling on April 19. The eight States of Northeast have 25 seats, of which 16 will go for polling tomorrow.
Out of 14 seats in Assam, polling will take place in five seats – Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaziranga, Lakhimpur, and Sonitpur, while in both seats of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, and in the lone seat of Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.
In the first phase of polling, the prominent candidates in the fray are Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who is contesting from Dibrugarh, and Lok Sabha’s Deputy leader of the opposition Gaurav Gogoi, who has been fielded by the Congress from Jorhat.
Former Tripura Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Deb is fighting from Tripura West Lok Sabha seat. In Meghalaya, former MoS Agatha K. Sangma and former MoS Vincent Pala, including the current health minister of the State Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, are key candidates.
There are fifteen crorepati candidates in Assam with the richest being independent women candidate Diluwara Begum from the Kaziranga seat. Sitting MP from Shillong Vincent Pala is among the richest MPs in the country. He has assets totaling over Rs. 125 crores.
