Dibrugarh, Jan 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma prioritized the welfare of tea workers and infrastructure development during his three-day visit to Dibrugarh, where he reviewed various Central and State Government schemes in the Naharkatia Co-District.
Addressing the needs of tea garden workers, Sarma directed officials to establish a reliable drinking water supply system by installing water pipes in tea gardens. He also emphasized improving healthcare and infrastructure in these areas to ensure better living conditions for workers and their families.
The CM instructed the timely completion of the Sasoni-Belbari Ali and Kikir-Balirghat connecting bridges by February next year. He also called for the construction of hanging bridges using locally sourced materials under the supervision of the Forest Department.
He said there are plans to develop the Naharkatia Hockey Stadium and transform the Naharkatia Nagaon Rajkhowa Playground into a mini stadium were discussed to enhance sports infrastructure in the region.
Sarma stressed the importance of completing school buildings like Sasoni Higher Secondary School and proposed repurposing closed government schools for official use. He also instructed officials to prepare proposals for establishing additional district and session courts in each subdivision.
The CM directed the classification of unclassified land and proposed solar-powered lighting and fencing systems to mitigate human-elephant conflicts in the Co-District.
Highlighting agricultural sustainability, Sarma encouraged the Agriculture and Forest Departments to launch a tree-planting movement, focusing on defining agricultural field boundaries with trees. He reiterated the need for comprehensive welfare measures for tea workers, ensuring their basic needs, such as water, are met promptly.
As part of his visit, Sarma laid the foundation stones for four major flyovers in Dibrugarh to address traffic congestion and boost connectivity. The projects include:
Amolapatty Chariali flyover (₹158 crore)
Mancotta Road flyover (₹84 crore)
Lahowal-Bordubi-Tinsukia Road flyover (₹72 crore)
Lezai Kalakhowa Road flyover (₹62 crore)
The meeting was attended by MLA Taranga Gogoi, Special DGP Harmeet Singh, Principal Secretary to the CM Dr K.K. Dwivedi, and other senior officials.
