Formalin in fish: West Garo Hills imposes strict measures on imported fish

Must read

Tura, June 12: The West Garo Hills (WGH) district administration has issued official directions to address concerns regarding the sale, transportation, and storage of imported fish. The development comes after the State government temporarily banned the sale of imported fish following detection of formalin on fish coming in the state. The move aims to ensure the safety and quality of fish available to consumers within the district.

The following instructions have been issued to relevant authorities:

1. Superintendent of Fisheries, in coordination with respective blocks, has been asked to appoint representatives to oversee the sale, transportation, and storage of fish from outside the state. Moreover, officials will work towards making fish from local fishery ponds readily available for local consumption whenever possible.

2. To educate the public about fish safety, the Superintendent of Fisheries has also been asked to prepare audio-visual films demonstrating how to identify fish laced with chemicals (if available) and, more importantly, how to properly wash fish to eliminate any traces of chemicals before cooking.

3. The District Agriculture Officer (DAO) and District Horticulture Officer (DHO) have been asked to maintain regular vigilance and supervision on vegetables and fruits sourced from outside the state or suspected of being treated with chemicals.

3. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Town Municipal Board (TMB) has been directed to assemble teams responsible for enforcing the ban within the town area.

4. The Secretary of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has been tasked to oversee the implementation of the ban in meat markets.

5. The Food Safety Inspector will conduct regular sample checks to ensure the quality of food products. A report will be submitted every Monday, summarizing the inspections and coordinating efforts with other relevant departments. Furthermore, the Food Safety Officer (FSO) will carry out routine checks on food materials and rations provided in mid-day meal schemes, ensuring the provision of safe and nutritious meals to students.

6. The West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) has been asked to assign police teams to support the implementation of the ban and report any violations promptly. They will also be responsible for maintaining vigilance within their respective jurisdictions.

7. The Block Development Officers (BDOs) have been asked to remain vigilant within their assigned blocks to ensure compliance with the directives and detect any unauthorized sale or transportation of fish.
