Dibrugarh, May 8: In a joint operation, the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia police busted an alleged human organ trafficking racket and arrested four suspected brokers from Margherita and Dibrugarh on Thursday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Zakir Hussain (53), Shankar Chentanu (28), Samir Pal (37), and Gopal Roy (31).

According to police, the accused allegedly attempted to take a 35-year-old man, identified as Rajib Dey from Margherita, to sell his kidney after luring him with promises of money and employment.

Police said Samir Pal and Gopal Roy are residents of Dibrugarh, while Zakir Hussain and Shankar Chentanu are from the Veneer Mill area in Margherita.

Sources alleged that the illegal organ trafficking network had been operating across several parts of Assam.

Following a complaint lodged by Rajib Dey’s family, an operation was launched under the supervision of Tinsukia Deputy Superintendent of Police Faiz Ahmed.

Police subsequently arrested the four accused from different locations in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.

A case has been registered at Margherita Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

Investigators are also probing whether any hospitals, medical staff, or doctors had links to the alleged racket.

Sources claimed that kidney trafficking networks have been active in tea garden areas of Upper Assam, allegedly targeting economically vulnerable families.
