Aizawl, July 5: Around 300 refugees from Myanmar crossed into Zokhawthar village in Mizoram’s Champhai district following fresh clashes between armed groups in Myanmar’s Chin State.

Zokhawthar, which lies along the Indo-Myanmar border, witnessed the latest wave of displacement as violence escalated in the neighbouring Rihkhawdar and Khawmawi villages. According to sources, intense gunfire broke out between the Chinland Defence Force – Hualngoram (CDF-Hualngoram) and the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF), prompting civilians to flee.

In response to the situation, the Assam Rifles sealed the Indo-Myanmar gate at Zokhawthar to control the influx.

A senior official confirmed that 33,004 Myanmar nationals, including 12,572 children, are currently taking shelter across 11 districts of Mizoram. These individuals are accommodated in relief camps, government buildings, and rented houses.

In addition to Myanmar nationals, around 7,800 Kuki-Zo refugees from Manipur—who fled following ethnic violence in May last year—are also being housed in various districts of the state.

The refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur largely belong to the Kuki-Zo-Chin-Hmar-Bawm tribal communities, who share close ethnic, cultural, and linguistic ties with the Mizo people of Mizoram.

Security forces have intensified operations in border areas to monitor and manage the situation and prevent further infiltration.
