Dibrugarh, July 5: Speculation is running high that veteran BJP leader Rajen Gohain may soon join the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), led by Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
However, Gohain has so far refrained from making any official statement on the matter.
On Saturday, Gohain held a three-hour closed-door meeting at a private hotel in Dibrugarh.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Gohain said, “You will come to know if there is any communication with the AJP or any other political party. So far, nothing of that sort has happened.”
The crucial meeting, held at Milan Nagar, Dibrugarh, was attended by Gohain and several key leaders from his faction.
Sources said Gohain has been dissatisfied with the state BJP leadership and its functioning, especially since being denied a ticket in the last elections.
A former Union minister and one of the senior-most BJP leaders in Assam, Gohain has long enjoyed a strong reputation among party workers.
“If Rajen Gohain joins AJP, it will be a major jolt to the BJP. Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP cannot afford to lose senior leaders like Gohain. He is known for his political strategies and deep understanding of party functioning. However, he has been unhappy with the current leadership under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” said a BJP source.
