Guwahati, Dec 8: In a story that reads like a triumph of spirit over circumstance, Simu Das from Assam’s Nagaon has emerged as one of India’s most inspiring sporting icons. A member of the Indian Blind Women’s Cricket Team that clinched the first-ever Blind Women’s T20 World Cup, Simu’s journey from rural Assam to the global stage is a testament to grit, self-belief and extraordinary determination.
Her rise drew national attention last week when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma received an early-morning phone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking whether he had met Simu and whether she needed assistance. Caught off guard, Sarma later contacted the PMO to learn more — only to discover that the world champion the Prime Minister spoke of was a young woman from his own state.
“When the Prime Minister asked me about Simu, I was confused — I didn’t know who she was,” Sarma said. “Later, when I found out she was from Assam and part of the Blind Women’s T20 World Cup-winning team, I immediately met her. Her journey, her positivity and her strength left me humbled.”

Born completely blind and raised in poverty, Simu grew up without a permanent home and with the added responsibility of caring for a brother who is both blind and deaf. Yet her circumstances never dimmed her resolve. In Class 8, she left for Delhi, where she discovered blind cricket and was nurtured by the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) and Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled. Her discipline and skill earned her a coveted spot on the national team — and ultimately, a World Cup title.
Recalling her journey, the Chief Minister said, “Simu didn’t tell anyone before she left to play cricket. Her determination and willpower made her a champion. She is a true inspiration not just for Assam, but for the entire nation.”
To honour her achievements, Sarma presented her with a cheque of ₹10 lakh and announced a government job for her. For Simu, whose life has been defined by struggle, the recognition marks a turning point.
