Tura, Oct 5: The West Garo Hills district administration has cautioned the general public to be cautious around the Ganol Dam, especially those residing downstream, as the water from the dam could be released any time.

This comes in the wake of the water in the dam’s reservoir reaching almost to its full capacity.

“This is for general information to the public that the water level at Ganol dam might be released in case of rise in water level in reservoir, i.e, above safe level. People staying in villages situated downstream of Ganol dam are requested to be extra cautious and are advised not to venture into river/stream so as to avoid any unfortunate incident and to stay away from streams, drains culvert etc. In case of flood, people should stay away from electric poles or power lines to avoid mishap or untoward incidents,” West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Jagdish Chelani, said in a press statement ton Thursday.

The water level has swelled the dam following heavy rains in the district.

The India Metrological Department had on Wednesday evening issued orange alert for West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills in the next 24 hours, predicting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. This was followed by another update on the evening of October 5 (Thursday) about Assam and Meghalaya expected to get very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday.
