TURA, Aug 7: All major Garo organisations of Assam have decided to unitedly oppose the Assam Government’s proposed amalgamation of all Garo Medium LP and ME Schools with other schools of the state warning that it would be detrimental to the Garo tribe which until now have depended on these schools for children to learn and preserve their mother tongue.
A joint meeting of the various Garo NGOs of Assam was held at Dudhnoi town in Goalpara district on Friday, 5th August 2022 where leaders of various Garo organisations discussed the burning issue related to the current amalgamation and shifting of the Garo Medium LP and ME Schools by the Government of Assam.
“The current policy of amalgamation and shifting of the Garo medium schools is not acceptable to the Garo people of Assam and we resolve to continue oppossing it and demand that the Government should withdraw the current amalgamation exercise and the status quo maintained,” stated a joint release by the protesting organisations led by the Garo Students Union of Assam.
