Samaguri victory a premium reward for BJP, says Assam CM

Must read

Guwahati, Nov 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scripted history in the Samaguri assembly constituency, a Congress stronghold for 25 years, during the recent Assam by-elections. BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarma secured a resounding victory, marking a political shift in a seat with a 65% minority population.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the win as a testament to the people’s faith in the BJP’s development-centric policies. “Samaguri, held by Congress for over two decades, has now embraced the BJP. This victory reflects the rejection of divisive and appeasement politics,” he said.

Sarma, while talking to his Facebook page, said the people of Assam have given us a 100% premium by helping us win the Samaguri assembly constituency.

Given its history of Congress dominance, the contest in Samaguri was seen as a litmus test for the BJP. Rakibul Hussain, a key Congress leader, had long maintained an influential grip on the constituency.

Sarma acknowledged the challenges, stating, “Winning Samaguri was not easy, especially with Pradyut Bordoloi, the Congress MP from Nagaon, backing the party. The people of Samaguri have spoken decisively, rejecting Congress’s policies of appeasement in favour of inclusive justice.”

The victory was part of a clean sweep for the BJP and its allies in the Assam by-elections, with the BJP bagging three seats and allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) winning one each.

The success in Samaguri is particularly significant for the BJP. For decades, the Congress leveraged minority votes to dominate the constituency. This time, however, the BJP’s focused outreach to minority communities yielded a breakthrough.

“Our goal is clear: appeasement to none, justice for all. This victory shows that the people of Samaguri believe in our vision of governance,” the Chief Minister added.

Diplu Ranjan Sarma’s win in Samaguri underscores a pivotal moment in Assam’s political landscape, signalling a decline in Congress’s influence in the region and a strengthening of the BJP’s foothold.
