Gas leak from oil rig impacts hundreds of tea workers in Tinsukia, Assam

Must read

Guwahati, Apr 10: Yet again an Oil gas rig operated by Oil India Limited in the Dighaltarang area under Baghjan village of Tinsukia district spewed out crude oil, gases, and condensates uncontrollably for almost three hours on Tuesday night.

According to reports by EastMojo, a team of experts from Oil immediately responded to the emergency, managing to plug the oil well by closing a valve, thus halting the leak. The incident reignited fears among the people living in the area, remembering the 2020 Baghjan blowout and oil fire that devastated the region.

According to locals, the leak happened in the oil rig situated close to the banks of the Dangori River that flows through Dibru Saikhowa National Park. “The damage to water bodies, tea gardens and agriculture farms is now being assessed. The people have become wary of oil production wells. After the 2020 blowout and fire, people constantly live in fear and anxiety,” said a villager.

“The incident happened around 11.30 pm in a production oil well, BGN 24 due to technical lapses. By 2.20 AM, the leak was contained,” said an official. The oil leak has affected at least 600 residents living close to the rig, raising serious concerns about their safety and well-being.

At present, the villagers of Baghjan and Natun Rongagora have been fighting a compensation case in the Supreme Court of India as well as the NGT.

According to the villagers, despite the Supreme Court and NGT’s orders, the Tinsukia district administration has not adequately compensated the people after the blowout of 2020.
