Guwahati, July 19: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has written a second letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) urging it to probe into the killing of five young boys during the anti-CAA in December 2019.
Gogoi also asked the NHRC to get the status report from the Assam police.
“I am writing to you for the second time on the issue of killing of five innocent young and unarmed peaceful protestors during the spontaneous anti-CAA protest in Assam,” Gogoi said in a letter addressed to Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, chairperson, NHRC.
“I would like to bring to your notice that in 2019 after the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by the Parliament there was a nationwide protest against the legislation. The people of Assam also peacefully protested against the CAA as it is against the basic tenets of the Indian Constitution. It violates Assam Accord and renders the National Register of Citizens (NRC) meaningless,” Gogoi said.
“But tragically, five unarmed Assamese youths were killed. These young protesters are- Sam Stafford, Dipanjal Das, Abdul Alim, Ishwar Nayak and Dwijendra Panging. The family of 17-year=old student Sam Stafford has alleged that he was shot at his head from point-blank range,” Gogoi also said.
“But unfortunately, even after four years no one has been held accountable for the death of the five innocent Assamese youths. I, therefore, humbly request your kind office to seek a status report from the Assam Police on the investigation in the killings of the aforesaid five Assamese youths, and direct the state authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible for the killings,” he added.
