Guwahati, July 4: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Gaurav Gogoi, underscored that the Congress must first reinforce its own foundations before considering alliances.

“We need to be a strong partner. Only then can we back our allies to victory,” he declared at a party meeting in Bokajan.

He cited a warm reception in Karbi Anglong as a sign of support. “Even small traders are telling me how hard business has become. Those who once distanced themselves from us are now coming back.”

He called upon party workers to unit. “If we don’t stand together now, our Constitution and democracy will be buried under their fascist regime. Congress will fight to restore fairness and constitutional values in Assam.”

On the other hand, Gogoi launched a fierce critique of the BJP-led government, the Election Commission of India (ECI), and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to Bokajan on Friday.

Addressing reporters, Gogoi accused the ECI of abandoning its neutrality. “It was once an impartial, constitutional body. Today, it has joined the Sangh Parivar,” he asserted.

“They care only about the BJP. They don’t want a free and fair election—but fascist rule that strips people of their rights,” he added.

Gogoi accused the Assam government of favoring a select few. “This government serves ‘mama, mami, Adani, and Ambani.’ They conduct eviction drives at will—on forest, tribal, and government land—mercilessly displacing the poor,” he said, referencing recent evictions in Lakhimpur.

He levelled sharp criticism at CM Sarma and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Tuliram Ronghang: “In Dispur, it’s Himanta Biswa Sarma Pvt. Ltd. In Diphu, Tuliram Ronghang Pvt. Ltd. They holiday together, treating Karbi Anglong like an ATM—siphoning land, coal, timber, and black money.”

Contrasting their leadership with his late father, former CM Tarun Gogoi, he remarked: “My father served as CM for 15 years. He didn’t build tea estates or Italian villas. Today’s leaders are consumed by personal gain.”

Criticizing BJP slogans like “Jati, Mati, Bheti,” Gogoi argued that the government had failed to ensure peace for farmers and tribal communities. “They preach preservation of identity and land, yet they trample the poor. Even local leaders in Karbi Anglong are amassing wealth at the public’s expense,” he said.

He also warned about rising lawlessness in Assam. “Crime is up. Elderly citizens, young girls—no one feels safe. The CM only cares about himself,” he charged.
