Shillong, Oct 17: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, today, chaired a meeting with Rangbah Shnongs, faith-based organisations, community leaders and educationists to discuss and find solutions and prevent crimes against women and children.

Giving his opening remarks Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, said that crimes against women and children are serious and a grave human right violation. Welcoming the participants to the very critical meeting and soliciting suggestions and the way forward the Chief Minister said, “Government and society must work together with a coordinated multi pronged approach to protect women and children ensuring a safe and happy life and environment for them.”

The different Rangbah Shnongs felt the need of enhancing surveillance systems and streetlights to improve safety. Strong legal frameworks, support services like helplines and shelter houses, education on gender equality, sex education, sensitisation, awareness programs, stronger and aggressive measures towards drug abuse, drug trafficking etc, social media and its negative impacts, school drop outs, teenage pregnancies, unemployment, were some issues that were discussed at length. Different participants also stressed on the need of having counsellors and counselling.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Chief Minister said, “The meeting was held to take suggestions from everyone to improve the safety and security of women and children in the state and the frequency at which some incidents happened in the last few months is a matter of concern for us and as a government we are serious about taking steps and measures to prevent such incidents with the collaborative efforts of the society and different stakeholders.” He also appealed to all in using social media responsibly to reduce such crimes.
