Govt cancels UGC-NET June 2024 exam a day after conducting it

New Delhi, June 19: In a shocking news to the lakhs of aspirants that appeared for the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination on Tuesday (June 18, 2024), the Ministry of Education, Government of India has announced cancellation of the exam a day after conducting it, citing discrepancies.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) had conducted the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination in OMR (pen and paper) mode on June 18, 2024 in two shifts across different cities of the country.

A PIB statement late on Wednesday evening read: “On June 19, 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) received certain inputs from National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit of Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs on the Examination. These inputs prima-facie indicate that the integrity of the aforesaid examination may have been compromised.”

“To ensure the highest level of transparency and sanctity of the examination process, the Ministry of Education, Government of India has decided that the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination be cancelled. A fresh examination shall be conducted, for which information shall be shared separately. Simultaneously, the matter is being handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (C.B.I.) for thorough investigation in the matter.”

The UGC – NET June 2024 examination was held on Tuesday at 1205 Exam Centres in 317 cities across the country for 11,21,225 candidates. In this year’s UGC – NET June 2024 Examination, the total of 11,21,225 registered candidates comprised of 6,35,587 Females, 4,85,579 Males and 59 Third Gender candidates. In comparison, last year’s UGC – NET Exam in December 2023 had a total of 9,45,872 registered candidates.
UGC – NET June 2024 was conducted for: (i) ‘award of Junior Research Fellowship and appointment as Assistant Professor’, (ii) ‘appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.’ and (iii) ‘admission to Ph.D. only’ in 83 subjects in OMR (Pen and Paper) mode.

In the matter pertaining to the NEET(UG) Examination-2024, the government said the issue related to grace marks has already been fully addressed. As regards certain irregularities alleged in the conduct of the examination in Patna, a detailed report has been sought from the Economic Offences Unit, Bihar Police. Government will take further action, on receipt of this report.

The Government further said it is committed to ensure the sanctity of examinations and protect the interest of students. It is reiterated that any individual/organization found to be involved in this matter will face strictest action.
