GSU opposes UCC, says it will destroy unique culture and traditions of Northeast

Must read

Tura, July 7: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has expressed its strong opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that it will destroy the ancient customs, unique traditions and culture of the people of North East.

Calling out to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who is heading the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the UCC and tasked with holding consultations with different stakeholders, GSU president Tengsak G Momin on Friday said Rijiju should understand the impact UCC would have on the indigenous communities of the North Eastern States since he is also a tribal from the region.

“He himself is also from a tribal community. So he must understand as a tribal how important our ancient custom traditions are as a unique community, as a unique tribal society, we are very unique I this world,” he said.

Stressing on the uniqueness of the region’s indigenous communities, cultures, customs and practices, he said the Union Minister, who is also the former Union Law Minister, must do his best to make the central government understand the implication of the UCC on the region’s people and their practices.

“He must do his best to make the Union government understand that UCC will destroy or will dilute the Sixth Schedule provisions. UCC will destroy the culture, custom and traditions of the indigenous people of Northeast India…,” he further stressed.

It is to be mentioned that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) seeks to have a single set of personal laws for the entirety of India, applicable to all citizens irrespective of their religion, gender and sexual orientation in matter such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption. The code comes under Article 44 of the Constitution.
