Must read

Guwahati, Dec 23: The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has written to Centre-appointed interlocutor Pankaj Kumar Singh, seeking an appointment to discuss the long-pending Gorkhaland issue.

The letter was signed by eight GTA Sabha members, including Binay Tamang, former chairman of the GTA Board of Administrators, and Ajoy Edwards, president of the Indian Gorkha Janshakti Front (IGJF).

In the letter, the signatories expressed hope that Singh would establish contact with them and formally requested an early official meeting. “We are hopeful that you will certainly establish contact with us. Through this letter, we formally request an early, official meeting with you,” the letter stated.

The signatories also referred to the GTA elections held on June 26, 2022, noting that out of 45 seats, the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) secured 27 seats, Hamro Party—founded by Edwards—won eight seats, the All India Trinamool Congress secured five seats, while Independent candidates won the remaining five.

According to reports, the appointment of a Centre-appointed interlocutor to address issues related to Darjeeling, the Dooars, and the Terai could have political significance for the BJP ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has opposed the appointment of the interlocutor. On November 17, she wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi objecting to the functioning of the interlocutor.
